When You Want Your Monies Worth & a Trophy to show for it, we use Kahula Kites.
I remember when life was simple and the only thing that mattered was getting your kite to fly. I also remember my dad saying, “Watch that power lines son,” as I scampered out the door. We would spend hours adding just enough tail to keep the kite straight and ride bicycles with the kite string tied to the fenders as the kite suspended in the air 30 or 40 feet above us. On calm days, we would run sometimes forever and a block trying to launch our kite. There were the store bought brands you put together or grandpa would talk of how there was a day where you had to make one to go fly a kite. I still enjoy kite flying; only today, it is from a beach, pier or stern of a boat! In addition, the kites I fly today are very different from the newsprint and balsa wood versions suggested by grandpa or from those heavy brand named kites we purchased at the five and dime. The kites I use today are of a high tech variety and I use them but for one purpose, to catch fish. There are but a few out there and most are over priced and come with no guarantee other than you will receive one once purchased. Some of these kites are used from the shorelines to over come obstacles like rocks or sand bars in a delusively method to bait presentation and others are for inshore/offshore use on fishing vessels. Water and kites do not mix and if your kite is wet, it probably will not fly until dry. Not so with a Kahula Kite. Wet or dry your going to catch fish and if you’re a Charter Fisherman, you will attract attention from that bright red fish floating in the sky off your stern. That could mean future dollars in your pockets just from using the kite and being noticed.
When flying a kite, just like casting your first conventional, practice makes perfect in putting out your Kahula kite. If you are kiting from a fishing vessel, it just takes a little practice to keep the boat motion either with the engine at an idle speed or with a drift so that the kite remains in the same relative vertical space over your honey hole consistently. The Kite is actually a vertical outrigger. From the highest point on your boat, the kite is launched and flown from the stern of a boat from its own rod and reel. A short stubby stoker attached to an EverolUSA 6/12 WP with PowerPro 16/65, and fishing line attached at the kite similar to an outrigger, only instead of keeping the line out, it keeps it up, is used in presenting your baits to the waiting trophies below. If propelling at a slow troll or idle drift your bait will be suspended just below the surface. As your bait, like a live bluerunner, is just at the surface, it will thrash and become excited in an attempt to get further below the surface. Ideally, the best in bait presentation when fishing for Kings,
The same is true when presenting live baits from your anchored boat over a reef, when kite fishing. As your kite gains lift or height it draws out your baits in a vertical motion, skipping your baitfish across the waters surface until it reaches its destination, where it too hangs just below the surface in an attempt to dive down out of sight of predators. Usually, in the case of kite fishing from a vessel on anchorage, the baitfish will come under attack as it “skips” across the waters surface. The presentation of a game fish attacking your bait on the surface is awesome! In addition, when kite fishing you can fish with dead baits, live baits or hardware for it is the fast moving skips that generally create a strike. Other methods include a form of running a longline from your kite. This type of kiting is called Bottom Longline Rigging.

The Bottom Longline is the perfect choice for any of the clear sandy east coast beach. Due to phenomenal catches, the chances of losing your kite to a shark are increased but it can be worth the risk if you are targeting smaller fish. Longlining has been around for years to commercial angler, why should they have all the fun. If Bottom Longlining is used, make sure to check your local fishing regulations as to see if you can use this method where you fish. When I lived in
Kahula Kites can accommodate up to a 25 mph wind supporting you in your angling needs. The expense involved is minimal and you will catch fish. So what are you waiting for, is it not now the time to go fly a kite and catch more fish?
