ANGLING SPOTS to HONEY HOLES

without a BOAT for Sarasota Florida:

Starting at Ringling Causeway there are a number of Honey Holes to find for sea trout to reds, flounder to blues and many other fish too. Starting at City Island angling Ken Thompson Park or the sea wall and piers of New Pass, with Deep water and catches of everything depending on the time of year from sharks to tarpon and other game fish too, Ringling Causeway Park offers some great wade fishing or under the bridges for killer heads this time of year. Bird Key along with Centennial Park is other causeway haunts in producing fish when in Sarasota without a boat. With a vessel, these spots are even hotter in that drift fishing on a falling tide can be hot, hot, and hot! Other hot spots to try in the county are Sun Circle & North Shore Drive, along the seawall and Sapphire Shores Park. Trout to heads and snapper too are abundant along the barnacle covered walls and rocky bottoms. Do not forget the pier by Harts Landing where you can get baits to snacks and great information on area hot spots too. The pier, Saprito Pier by the Ringling Causeway can be a great spot for about any fish found in the bay with a surprising shark to tarpon during the right time of year. Great place for the entire family and it is free to boot. Fishing license needed if from out of state only. Other good spots to take the kids to a day away from it all are Bay Island park off Siesta Key Bridge, Norsota Way at Siesta Drive and of course, Whitaker Park Boat Ramp located at 1455 N. Tamiami Trail for both launches to catching great crabs to weakfish right off the docks.

From Prehistoric Megalodon to Real Time Tiger Sharks
Venice, Florida offers a world to both Angle to Dive For.

Jesus and his Spotted Tiger Shark
Sharky's on the Pier
Venice Florida

Imagine an adventure in combing the beaches, looking for shark's teeth and sea shells and not just any sharks tooth but that of the most feared of all sea creatures of the time,  Megalodon (believed to be over 60 feet in length) with an open jaw largest enough for a six foot person to stand in.  Chances are good on excavating one of these teeth and more along the shoreline of our Venice Florida beaches, with sand scoop but do not, despair if the great mega tooth is still buried out there somewhere; tiger, bull, sandbar and mako are a sure scoop. Bring a snorkel and fins to pick up some nice souvenirs off the fossilized coral bottom off Alhambra, which is nice at an eight-foot dive for easy pickings. Further off the beach is “The Bone Yard”, located on the shoals of the “Venice Reef”. A swim from the beach is possible but a boat is better for the return swim can become tiresome. Located in 25 to thirty feet deep waters to the wash or sides of this concrete, rebar structured reef are some rather large finds in big teeth and quaintly too. Located between the Venice Pier and the run off pipes on the beach, the reef is a tricky one to find unless you have its numbers or wish to crisis-cross until you find that 17 foot bump; top of the reef. A new eBook called Numbers is coming out early next month for around a buck and with it; you can have all the dive/angling spots you ever wanted to add to your own numbers book. A listing of all reefs, their consistency and GPS/Loran coordinates. Now you too can fish like the pro’s or dive with the best in finding beauty to artifacts from the depths of Davie Jones Locker!

Prehistoric relics of miniature horses to giant wooly mastodons are strewn everywhere and mixed along among the seashells, which you find here are beyond description! Stunning! If you are looking for a weekend day-trip, remember the beaches of Venice, Florida! Venice is less than an hour's drive south of the Clearwater, Safety Harbor area or driving north from the Ft. Myers area; it is the perfect place for a family adventure! Six to nine foot sharks are caught and released in an Eco-Angling Event on the weekends by local area Venice Pier Anglers, (The Island Anglers), catching present day tigers, bulls, nurse, hammerheads and at least 10 other smaller varieties of “jaws.”

Great restaurants to places to stay, motels to quaint Bed and Breakfast’s; Venice Florida is but centrally located to fun and adventures abound. Drop on by and see just why downtown Venice is a transudation of laid backed luxury in visitor’s reclamations of our old style Floridian past. “Pull up a chair and stay awhile, y’here!”

A Craigslist in Sharks to Shark Parts; Venice Florida

 By Gary Anderson

Prehistoric to Live Teeth are found in Venice Florida, a Craigslist in Sharks!

Venice Florida, which lies on the Gulf of Mexico about 70 miles south of Tampa or about 1-1/2 hours drive down I75 is the Craigslist of angling for sharks to shark parts in southwest Florida. Venice is the self-proclaimed "Sharks' Tooth capital of the World and I have coined the phrase; on the Sharks Tooth Coast." Venice is really the tail of two cities; south Venice and out beyond the I75 corridor in its hustle an bustle and Venice the island where its beaches can yield up to 18 or more prehistoric sharks to horse teeth per hour on a stroll back into time. If angling for the beasts from the beach or the city municipal fishing pier, you can view rows and rows of sharp, white teeth. Venice Florida is an enchanting, sleepy little Florida town that one would expect to find in a 30’s post talky film with James Cagney playing Capone as the musical unfolds. It hasn't fallen prey to a complete revitalization of the 21st century, as of yet, with the exception of Millers Towers and the usual bickering found at city hall among its hens and roosters, while the fox lays siege.

The downtown commercial area encompasses just over 9 blocks of businesses including home decor and clothing shops, jewelry shops, a wine and coffee shop, and also a number of varied restaurants, ice cream parlors, candy shops and taverns , a bit of something for everyone. Just beyond City Hall, is a short hop, skip and a walk down Venice Avenue with huge old oak trees that spread their canopy over the lush, gassy median areas before emptying onto the Venice Beach and its pavilion greeting customers from snacks to a relaxing sit in the shade, while browsing beachy activities. Turning south off Venice Avenue, on to Harbor Drive and heading south one finds a Mecca of activities surround the Brohard Park area with a shaded pavilion, restrooms, outside showers and boardwalks to the beach. Sharky’s on the pier is located directly to the south of the Brohard pavilion, with the infamous city pier known for catching some of the worlds most notorious sharks. Surprisingly enough, there has of yet been a reported shark incident from the beaches of Venice, Florida. This is probably because the Venice Pier Anglers keep them so well fed with baited delights in their quest to CPR them (Catch, Photograph and Release). A sight to see for anyone visiting the pier, especially on the weekends, when these sharkers are out early evening until dawn because an old saying comes to mind when thinking about sharks; from dusk until dawn the machine turns on, sharks generally feed during these times.

Venice City Pier is also home to many a dedicated individuals who with the Venice Pier Anglers, practice the belief of “Positive Mentoring through Fishing.” Come on down to the pier any weekend and catch that special thrill as one can watch a sharking event in CPR. Just use caution in your watching of any landings on the deck of the pier for these fish may be just a fish but their whipping tails and jaw area are to be from a distance rather than up close, as an inquisitive viewer. That is unless you know what you are doing and then ask if you can help do not just dive in.

Walking the beach, to cycling on the cities bike highway are a means to an awesome and exciting way to unwind and relax. With a bicycle, one can avoid the little traffic found in Venice, Florida and go just about anywhere on the island.

On another note, if your into a charter, give us a holier and we will steer you to those who can ‘Hook You Up’, of course at no fee for the information.
