Well Guys and Gals, I angled the hospital ward on the 9th floor of Tampa General as
"Red Bull FLUGTAG" was going on out side my window presented by my old school to which I am an Alumni;

PRO-Reports

Watching the boats go by, as RED BULL FLUGTAG was on going on below and airing on the USF SUN Channel, I went on a holiday to the hospital. Therefore, no fish until I get out again or one of my friends clues me in. Therefore, to this I give you all a thought on life, the next time you are just sitting around and saying, “there is always tomorrow.”

While attending an evaluation from a Doctor on the ninth floor of USF Tampa General Hospital, over this past weekend and prior to a grueling three days of on going tests in evaluating my problems, he said, “Mr. Anderson, how can you laugh about what maybe going on? In your situation one would think you would be of a more grievous or concerned nature.” To this, I had to use the script or real feelings of a poker player named Doyle, as seen on Poker After Dark Commercials:

“We do not stop playing because we are old;

we grow old because we stop playing.”

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success.

  • You have to laugh and find humor every day.

  • You have to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around whom are dead and they do not even know it! There is a giant difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old, lie in bed for one full year, and do not do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am fifty-five years old, stay in bed for a year, and never do anything I will turn fifty-six. Anybody can grow older. That does not take any talent or ability.

  • The idea is always be on the look in finding the opportunity in adaptation.

  • Have no regrets. AS one grows older, we usually do not have regrets for what we did, but rather for things, we did not do.

Make do with what you have and as my Dad always said, “Damn the martini’s and full steam ahead!” I mean, what else is there but to do, give up; I think not!

Live your life and passing it down to your friends or loved ones these four secrets to staying Young, Happy and becoming a Success is but a wonderful gift to give and if there is time, tak’em fish’n. In addition, remember if you cannot find the time to take a kid fishing, then you are out of time with the future!

Positive mentoring through fishing is not only a phrase to live by but is also a philosophy in responsible stewardship to our marine ecosystems. The Venice Pier Anglers a group of anglers united in a bond to angling formed back in the 1960’s and through their philosophies, practices and behavior in respecting the environments of the pier, The Island Anglers continue in their past efforts in creating and passing on the traditions for years to come to all of those who will listen. We have two Blogs online, The Island Angler Florida Edition set up to raise and employ local funds for local outdoors sportsmen events and On the Boards of the Pier, a  revolutionary fishing information site. The site gives all Venice Pier Anglers a place where they can go to get all the information needed to become a better angler and to catch more fish.. Kevin Carlson is a competitive and serious angler in that he could not find suitable sunglasses for himself and his friends to fish in a Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, his solution was simple - invent the perfect pair of sunglasses. Prototypes were made and top professionals conducted extensive field tests delivering an outstanding product used daily now for all life styles.

Ocean Waves Sunglasses were originally designed to win fishing tournaments and now has now been refined so that all outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy unbeatable visual acuity and eye protection. From open water El Dorado, to angling the skinny of the flats Ocean Waves catch more fish period! No other sunglasses have the degree of polarization, U.V. protection, optical clarity and freedom from lens distortion that Ocean Waves do. FISHSTICKS & POON BAITS

A sure fire way to turn on the most finicky of fish! Switching over to artificial, I employed the famed “Poon Bait.” A sure fire tempting allure to the most finicky of fish. Using my lightest of rods, a Pflueger® Infusion™ SS Inshore Spinning Combos and 12 test Red Cajun line...

Living here in North Port, our angling adventure started by launching a Pamlico 135T and adjusting the seats to fish two as we set out across a slough off of Cornelius and North Port Drive in search of Snook to Tarpon. This may seem like a flirtation to suicide, gators and all, but it is not that bad this time of year. The gators are of yet in the mood to mate, so are relatively shy and will disembark off the banks away from you if you chatter loud enough in announcing your approach. I would not recommend doing this in the springtime though; mating season, for they become quite aggressive and being in at eye level might remind them of something you do not wish to be part of. In addition, catch & Release is your best bet when in a kayaking. Stringers are an invite to dinner with the catch as an appetizer and you the main course but not before being propelled at a speed of one alligator power; interesting thought. There were tarpon in the area, jumping three in the 35-40 pound range with my new ‘Fishsticks’ from Inshore Florida. Trial testing for now, on the market later if product produces extreme results, which early indications show, I need more of these Hot Little Numbers! Fishsticks Catch Fish, lots of fish and all of the fish like them no matter their type, size or number; I have had two attacks the lure at the same time! Jim and I also caught snook and weakfish on Fishsticks and Live shrimp worked very well under them too, with the trout, surpassing a limit within half an hour if it were season and you could keep them, Oh well, season is around the corner and by then I will have made up some more sticks. Working our way down to Lemon Bay was a redfish treat with a snook filled topping. Bumping all the Fishsticks but slamming the shrimp was an exciting adventure to never forget. Flow-Troll buckets work well behind a tube but make sure it is attached at least ten or more feet behind you so if you feel that unsuspecting tug from behind, you can let ‘em have it, you can always buy another bucket! Light freshwater Beetlespins jig heads tipped with thin micro-cut strips of **Gulp Alive conquered all that reigned the edges of the sand holes or drop-offs around them.  Good thing I had decided to bring my waders though, not only does this Florida boy get chilly with a lot of extraction in the cold bay waters, there too were plenty of jellyfish action too and I did not wish to dance with them! Getting out of the kayak and into the water is a real stealth approach in catching wary fish.  If you are of interest in finding out more information on Kayaks or where to purchase them in our area, I would advise checking out The Wilderness System or your favorite brand found through Economy Tackle Kayaks of Sarasota, Florida. Not only do they know their business when it comes to kayaks but they know the lingo and equipment you need to catch more fish while angling on Inshore Florida waters.

Closer to home in Venice, Flounder in the near doormat size at 22 inches and growing are being produced on both the three inch Gulp Leeches rigged under a flounder rig and moved ever so slightly across the bottom or with live shrimp, out on the pier at Sharky's;

early in the morning on an out going tide. Upon examining the contents of their bellies, at the cleaning stations, by the beach on the pier in Venice, I can see no reason why they would ever be on a bite. Their stomachs were so full of greenies it looked like a green and white cue ball with no room at the inn for more. Switching over to artificial I employed the famed “Poon Bait.” A sure fire tempting allure to the most finicky of fish. Using my lightest of rods, a Pflueger® Infusion™ SS Inshore Spinning Combos

and 12 test Red Cajun line,

Pflueger® Infusion™
SS Inshore Spinning Combo

If it is not a Pflueger it's just a rod & reel!

I baited the Eagle Claw number one long shank hook with a Gulp Alive Minnow Grub under PoonBait and cast as far as possible out along the sandbar. Remembering fish expect food to travel with the current, not against it. Closing the bail and reeling in the PoonBait at a speed, which causes the spoon to rotate as close to the bottom as possible, very slow, at first with intermittent of a moderate reel in-between. It will take practice for at first you will just be dragging the bottom but before long, you will find the right rod angle to speed ratio and wham bam, “FISH ON!”  PoonBait work best in off watercolor conditions or with low light as found in the early morning or just before sunset. And the PoonBait is not just for Flat fish, when slow retrieved, trolled or even hung as the catch line on a Trolley, it can be deadly for all Mackerels, Cuda, Wahoo, Cobia and most other toothy game fishes. Soon you will be able to purchase our PoonBait  after our angling trials are finished and we put together the right combination so, until then, you can always use the “Do It Yourself Method” and Make Your Own PoonBait.

How to make a PoonBait

  1. Purchase some cheap tablespoons. These

  2. Remove the handle as close to the spoon as possible and file smooth. This is important to avoid cutting your feed line.

  3. Drill a small hole and smooth, emery file works best. Exact size in unimportant but it should be big enough to allow a length of 50lb line freely through it.

  4. Cut a piece of 50lb line about 18 inches long and pass through the hole. (If angling for Mackerels or other Toothy Critters, use a SS single strand wire of 45lb. test). The high strength is because of abrasion caused by the soon spinning.

  5. Tie a large swivel at one end and a smaller one at the other protected by a bead as shown.

  6. Slip a few small beads on and attach a long shanked hook, 1/0 or 2/0 is ideal for decent sized flounder.

  7. Larger hook sizes are needed for bigger game fishes so act accordingly.

COBIA…What a beautiful sounding word in any language it is spelled TASTY! Earlier throughout the week these guys infiltrated the bottom of those pods of greenies mixed with threads only to give rise to an occasional snack of opening their mouths and filling the gullet. To those fish Mike Cavallo and I rigged up East Coast Style and dangled a live Lizard fish, hooked through the mid-tail section, on 65 pound stainless steel single strand wire to a 7/0 Honer Circle hook attached to a freestyle paternoster rigging. This type of rigging is done more on the east coast of Florida, thus has earned the nickname ‘East Coast Style Rigging’ but to the rest of the world and especially in Europe where it comes from, it is known as angling with a Paternosters Rig. How you attach the snood is a matter of personal opinion but the bait must rest on the sea bed. Tilt the rig at an angle to check. I like to jam a swivel between two beads. The swivel and link swivel can be replaced by a link if you wish. I prefer swivels as they allow the rig to roll in to gullies and holes more easily. A short snood length often results in fish hooking themselves more easily but a long snood looks more natural. Possible to attach several snoods but tangling a problem. Using weaker line for the snood allows the hook to break free if snagged. The use of booms keeps the rig from tangling but decreases the naturalness and cast distances. How ever you use it, it catches fish, period!

(PATERNOSTERS RIGGINGS)

The other popular method of bottom fishing for Cobia or your favorite bottom dweller is to use a Pulley Rig. Being one of my favorites when angling for sharks, it involves a principle I thought I would never use while attending High School. I mean, how is physics and mathematics ever going to catch me a fish? Maybe I should have listened to the lesson plan more and thus, through the years, would have caught more fish. The Pulley Rig works on the principle the heaviest weight always hangs the lowest. Hence the lead goes first when casting, it lies on the seabed like a paternoster but when you reel in a fish the lead gets tucked neatly out of harms way. This reduced the chance of the lead getting snagged or bashing against the fish. This rig also has the advantage the fish feels less resistance when taking the bait. This means more bites per hook up ratio and fewer losses or thrown hooks.
