Not so long ago before GPS or LORAN, sailors to explorers used the stars to get from one place to another. To some peoples there was cause to worship these bodies and to others, a means to find or fish their best spots. Whatever the reason, the stars are always there from wishes to finding your way home.

== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==

The Last Quarter Moon is Friday 25 July. Venus can now be readily seen just above the western horizon in the early twilight. During the week it rises higher in the sky, heading towards Regulus, Mars and Saturn. By the end of the week these four objects form an attractive line above the north-west horizon in the early evening. Jupiter can be seen as the brightest object above the eastern horizon in the evening, and its moons look great in binoculars. This is an excellent time to look at this giant world through a small telescope. If you don't have a telescope, go to one of your local astronomical societies open days. In the late evening of Monday 28 July to the early morning of Tuesday 29 July, the Aquariid meteor shower may be seen. Places with clear, dark skies should see a meteor every 3-5 minutes or so.

A Craigslist in Sharks to Shark Parts; Venice Florida

By Gary Anderson

Prehistoric to Live Teeth are found in Venice Florida, a Craigslist in Sharks!

Venice Florida, which lies on the Gulf of Mexico about 70 miles south of Tampa or about 1-1/2 hours drive down I75 is the Craigslist of angling for sharks to shark parts in southwest Florida. Venice is the self-proclaimed "Sharks' Tooth capital of the World and I have coined the phrase; on the Sharks Tooth Coast." Venice is really the tail of two cities; south Venice and out beyond the I75 corridor in its hustle an bustle and Venice the island where its beaches can yield up to 18 or more prehistoric sharks to horse teeth per hour on a stroll back into time. If angling for the beasts from the beach or the city municipal fishing pier, you can view rows and rows of sharp, white teeth. Venice Florida is an enchanting, sleepy little Florida town that one would expect to find in a 30’s post talky film with James Cagney playing Capone as the musical unfolds. It hasn't fallen prey to a complete revitalization of the 21st century, as of yet, with the exception of Millers Towers and the usual bickering found at city hall among its hens and roosters, while the fox lays siege.

The downtown commercial area encompasses just over 9 blocks of businesses including home decor and clothing shops, jewelry shops, a wine and coffee shop, and also a number of varied restaurants, ice cream parlors, candy shops and taverns , a bit of something for everyone. Just beyond City Hall, is a short hop, skip and a walk down Venice Avenue with huge old oak trees that spread their canopy over the lush, gassy median areas before emptying onto the Venice Beach and its pavilion greeting customers from snacks to a relaxing sit in the shade, while browsing beachy activities. Turning south off Venice Avenue, on to Harbor Drive and heading south one finds a Mecca of activities surround the Brohard Park area with a shaded pavilion, restrooms, outside showers and boardwalks to the beach. Sharky’s on the pier is located directly to the south of the Brohard pavilion, with the infamous city pier known for catching some of the worlds most notorious sharks. Surprisingly enough, there has of yet been a reported shark incident from the beaches of Venice, Florida. This is probably because the Venice Pier Anglers keep them so well fed with baited delights in their quest to CPR them (Catch, Photograph and Release). A sight to see for anyone visiting the pier, especially on the weekends, when these sharkers are out early evening until dawn because an old saying comes to mind when thinking about sharks; from dusk until dawn the machine turns on, sharks generally feed during these times.

Venice City Pier is also home to The Island Anglers, a group of dedicated individuals who with the Venice Pier Anglers, practice the belief of “Positive Mentoring through Fishing.” Come on down to the pier any weekend and catch that special thrill as one can watch a sharking event in CPR. Just use caution in your watching of any landings on the deck of the pier for these fish may be just a fish but their whipping tails and jaw area are to be from a distance rather than up close, as an inquisitive viewer. That is unless you know what you are doing and then ask if you can help do not just dive in.

Walking the beach, to cycling on the cities bike highway are a means to an awesome and exciting way to unwind and relax. With a bicycle, one can avoid the little traffic found in Venice, Florida and go just about anywhere on the island.

On another note, if your into a charter, give us a holier and we will steer you to those who can ‘Hook You Up’, of course at no fee for the information. Check out our other website if you are into the inshore waters surrounding Venice, Florida. “See Ya and y’all come back now; ya here!”

THE ISLAND ANGLERS ACTION PAGE

On a seldom and rare occasion are sharks ever killed for their meat or consumption while Island Anglers are targeting them from piers end, nor is the practice of finning allowed, for those who are members or those that just practice The Venice, Florida Island Anglers Bylaws, for we believe in positive mentoring through fishing. CPR (Catch, Photograph and Release) are fundamentals to helping ensure our fisheries livestock and continued survival. Formed years ago by area local anglers to work as a watch group towards our marine environments at beaches edge and to foster the love of fishing to those who visited the pier, membership was loosely scattered worldwide, The Island Anglers came together and formed a tight bond with nature while angling out on the Venice City pier at Sharky’s. We practiced our mission statement of “positive Mentoring through Fishing” and watched many a juvenile angler grow while achieving a respect towards the sport we all call fishing. “Sometimes it is lending a hand to a stranger in order to help them understand what they just caught or why they must release that fish back into the water unharmed,” Jaime Fuentes said. “Maybe they need guidance in knot tying to using the correct hook with the laws always on a change daily, it would seem,” replied Mike Cavallo, “we started with a bunch of guys, their wives, children and friends all angling together and under the direction of Gary Anderson, a website was produced. It is for anyone catching fish as we send out a message of CPR through their pictures for posting and sharing with friends, family and those of interest on the internet.” As our picture base grew, so did that of our mission statement “Positive Mentoring through Fishing.” Membership dues pay and keep its web pages open and free to all of our public, worldwide. From pictures, we grew to articles of interest, updates to changes in laws and regulations in Florida as well, keeping the public abreast of new equipment to recipes in aiding to the recreational sport of Florida angling. The Island Anglers have sponsored and co-sponsored a number of children fishing events and tournaments used in giving our local disadvantaged youth a chance to go fishing. Taking the Boys and Girls clubs of Sarasota and Lee county on fishing expeditions as well, aiding in Family fishing day with the City of Venice and Sharky’s on the pier are of previous happenings to which we were involved. With paid members from Great Britain to Florida, The Island Anglers Group incorporated in January of 2008; The Island Angler, Inc. formed under the direction of Jaime Fuentes, Michael Cavallo and Gary Anderson. “But the future knows to where we will go and through our memberships and small online shop we can continue to give the service expected of an Island Angler through responsible stewardships to our surrounds, fellow man and the fish we are angling for,” said Gary Anderson. Plans are more funds rising to youth groups in need through angling events, teaching to preaching responsible stewardship and pier ethics to attitudes in etiquette while angling on the boards of the Venice City Pier, Florida. The Island Anglers is recognized and listed within the Florida Wildlife Commission website, volunteers as “Givers” with the Make A Wish Foundation and participates with Takemefishing.org, the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation as well, Anglers Legacy.
